Remember the scene in the Sound of Music, the one where Captain Von Trapp is driving down the road with his fianc and they hear singing? Or Driving Miss Daisy when she's sitting in the back of the car going down the road, the chauffeur is driving? Now close your eyes and picture these scenes. The amazing thing is you will recall those beautiful trees. Trees set the scene for crowning moments in many movies and in real life too.

Ball and burlap trees, shade trees and flowering trees provide complimentary aesthetics and ambience in parks, gardens and on landscaping projects. The more land to be sculpted the more tree coverage and versatility available to the landscape architect for type and variety.

The practical aspects of planting trees are ground stability, fresh air and a natural habitat. Combining the right trees with the existing landscape and building structures will make for a seamless view and a pleasurable environment. Varieties of ball and burlap, shade and flowering trees can be mixed and matched to blend with the landscape and buildings. Use pavers, benches and other landmarks to enhance the tree features.

The types of trees and shrubs used will help define the use of the area. Roads lined with benches and shade trees invite people to sit, to spend some time; fields dotted with flowering trees laden with blossoms invite a stroll and playfulness; varieties of B & B's will add variety to an undulating landscape that will draw the eye to the trees themselves.

In addition to creating setting and ambiance, trees will add value to a property and marketability to a business complex. When adding value to a particular project consider the ramifications of the foliage chosen. If the trees are hardy varieties and quick growers the inherent value will be immediate. For tree types that require regular pruning, raking and feeding, the value may be higher but so will the cost of maintenance.

A mall or business complex will be more desirable to tenants if the buildings are complimented by welcoming landscapes. Eating areas are also enhanced by trees and shrubs but of course consideration of tree heights and any shedding of leaves, flowers or fruit is important.

Trees can be used to create an inviting and desirable environment, one that is memorable as well as practical. They are a large investment and should be considered thoughtfully in terms of the larger landscape and desired purpose of the area.
