When you hear the term "weed" you want to get out the weed eater and your gardening gloves and pull the invader out before it can take you're your lovely garden. But there are some weeds that are just to pretty to put down-or tear up, as it were. Eupatoriadelphus Fistulosus, or the Joe Pye Weed is one weed that you can count on to keep your garden looking beautiful without taking over and choking out the rest of your flowers.
Some varieties of Eupatoriadelphus Fistulosus have medicinal properties and while they will grow well in a garden, they will also fare well as potherbs or as part of a flower box or hanging planter.
These plants will flower during the months of July through September and come in a variety of colors to complement your garden-you can choose from white, yellow, pink, purple, deep pink and even red. The flowers grow in clusters between four and seven inches wide and one plant can have hundreds of blooms. The plant itself will typically grow to between two and seven feet.
While Eupatoriadelphus Fistulosus is able to survive in areas that have average moisture, the ideal conditions for this plant are in a moist soil that is never allowed to completely dry out-a moist soil is one with a water table that is never lower than at least one foot below the surface. Additionally, this plant grows best in areas where the soil is kept cool-shade is an excellent growing and germination location for these flowers, although they do still need some sun, as they have been classified in some circles as a tropical plant. If you live in a droughty environment, it would be best to consider other plants before bringing Eupatoriadelphus Fistulosus into your garden.
If you choose to germinate your Eupatoriadelphus Fistulosus at home, you should keep all of the seeds dry in refrigerated storage-much the way you would do with film for a 35mm camera. Don't expect this plant to germinate on a time schedule, either. For this flower you may wait as little as seven days or as many as several months.
Overall, Eupatoriadelphus Fistulosus is a beautiful weed that can be used in your garden as an ornamental piece, much the way Morning Glory might be used. Just because it dons the name "weed" doesn't mean you should give up on it right away.
