If you're looking for something different for your garden but you can't find a regular flower that suits your needs, it may be time to turn to the weeds. That's right-some plants that have been labeled as weeds, like the Eupatorium Fistulosum Joe Pye, can bring your garden to a whole new level of beauty.
There are four different species of Joe Pye, most found in or around the greater areas of Connecticut. Other areas where you may find one of the additional species of Joe Pye include places like Kentucky and Ohio, or other dry areas in the Midwest. But Eupatorium Fistulosum Joe Pye is one Joe Pye that is different than the others. While it has the same flowers-clustered and colored a dull pink or white-this particular Joe Pye has a hollow stem and is often referred to as the Hollow Joe Pye. One of the interesting things about this flowery weed is that its large leave produce the scent of vanilla when they are crushed.
The Eupatorium Fistulosum Joe Pye will flower between July and September with most of the blooms dying off in mid to late August. The plants not only grow tall but will also grow wide and you should provide them plenty of room to propagate and germinate. This may mean spreading them out 16 or more inches apart for growing purposes in some cases. These plants do grow between 3 and 10 feet high and can be as many as 2 to 7 feet wide. If you do not watch your plant and trim it back to keep it under control, you will lose control of it and much of your garden. Because of its incredible height, this plant is best suited for the back of your garden or along fence lines.
It is important to remember that Eupatorium Fistulosum Joe Pye loves moist soil that never dries out. If you live in an area that is prone to frequent drought you should consider other plants before this Joe Pye or other similar species. While it is not an invasive plant it may steal the water supply of other plants in your garden to keep itself alive.
Remember, every garden needs a gardener that is both responsible and adventurous. If you're willing to do the work to keep this plant in check then Eupatorium Fistulosum Joe Pye may be the right plant for you.
