Sky Rocket Juniper – The Favorite Garden Plant

Juniperus Scopulorum, or commonly called as Sky Rocket Juniper, is a native plant of America found in the western regions. Sky Rocket Juniper comes from the family of Cupressaceous. Sky Rocket Juniper is a slow growing evergreen tree that attains a beautiful pyramid shape. The tree can attain a maximum height of 15 m and spreads around two-three ft. A small Sky Rocket Juniper tree would very well suit the residential gardens and landscapes. The leaves are opposite or sub opposite and are normally whorled in pairs of two or three. The color of the leaves is blue-green and it remains the same even in winter season. The tree bears flowers, which are inconspicuous and are not showy. The fruits of the tree are round in shape that is around 0.5 inch in length and have a lovely blue color. They do not attract wild life, but do attract birds and do not have a significant litter problem. The fruits are persistent on the tree and are showy. The tree grows upright with multiple trunks and the branches or the trunk is not drooped. The tree requires little pruning to develop a strong structure and is resistant to breakage.

Sky Rocket Juniper requires good sunlight for its growth. This tree is tolerant to loam, sand, acidic, alkaline, and well-drained soils. It is highly drought resistant, is a very healthy plant, and is free from pests or various diseases. Today, many cultivars of the plant are available because of the efforts of the nursery operators. Gray gleam, tabletop, and Wichita Blue are few of them. Sky Rocket Juniper is one among the favorite trees that is suitable for a garden . The popularity of the tree is because of its low maintenance and excellent tolerance to drought conditions. The dusty green color of the plant is more attractive and do not fade or change to brown color. The tree will impress year after year with its beautiful growth and by attracting birds. It is ideal for the urban gardens and in the residential complexes where large base plants are not wanted.

The pests that might attack Sky Rocket Juniper are Bagworm caterpillars, Juniper scale, Juniper webworm, and mites. Bagworm caterpillars build bags using the debris and foliage and live in. They feed on the foliage of the plant. You can easily pick them with your hand and remove them. Juniper scale will cause yellow needles and these infected branches will not produce further growth. Juniper webworm webs the twigs and needles that would cause them to become brown and die. The larva of the plant originates in the densest part of the plant and is often unnoticed. Twig light is a disease that causes death and browning of the twigs tips. This disease will hamper the growth of the stem and if not tackled at the earlier stage then it can lead to the death of the plant. The best way to tackle this is to prune out the dead branch tips.
